I know not whether laws be right,
Or whether laws be wrong;
all that we know who lie in jail
Is that the wall is strong;
And that each day is like a year,
A year whose days are long.

Bathurst Correctional Centre

Any Australian visitor to this website knows a song by 'Cold Chisel' called 'Four Walls"
Bathurst Correctional Centre is a medium/minimum institution for males situated 210km west of Sydney. The centre serves as a reception prison for western NSW. A minimum security cell block, known as X Wing, is located outside the walls of the main gaol.
Bathurst Jail is infamous in the annals of Australian jail history for the so-called 'Bathurst Batterings', "the riots of 1970 and 74. Starting with the chapel, in 1974 prisoners burned the jail and it was closed for seven years.

Grafton Correctional Centre

Grafton Correctional Centre is a medium/minimum security institution for males and females situated in the Centre of Grafton City, 650km north of Sydney. I t wasn't always a medium security prison... As well as housing sentenced offenders, the Centre serves as a reception prison for northern NSW.

Long Bay Correctional Complex

Long Bay Correctional Complex is located 14km south of Sydney's central business district. It's a complex maze of penal misery. It comprises five institutions : four maximum security and one minimum security correctional centre. In the early 1970s the NSW prison system set out to reassure the community that evil could be successfully contained. The worst criminals ... the 'civil dead', were brought together for suitable punishment and confinement within a state of the art, sensory deprivation unit in the grounds of Long Bay Jail. It was a windowless concrete block called Katingal, a high-tech, high-security experiment that cost over three million dollars to build, housed only forty men, and operated for only three years. Known as the ‘Electronic Zoo’ Katingal became a symbol of everything that was wrong with the state’s prisons.

more to come including Parramata Gaol's circle, and the wretched Pentridge Prison's  Jika Jika Detention Unit where five inmates died protesting their conditions in a fire.
